Description

As part of the Remote Alarm on Passenger and Goods Passenger Lifts Standards EN 81-28 (2003), all lifts in the UK are required to have an emergency alarm that was traditionally connected to a rescue service via telephone. With the analogue to digital switchover, lift owners must now manage the transition of their emergency alarms from analogue phone lines to other digital alternatives. Choosing the right solution ahead of time is becoming essential for building owners and managers to keep their lifts compliant and their passengers safe. The ultra-lightweight lifts are constructed for Opulent Designs International in the UK by carbon fibre specialist Supernatural-X at its 10,000 square metre facility. They will then be shipped to Holland Marine Lifts BV in Rotterdam for assembly and onboardinstallation.

If you own or manage a building with lifts in the UK, you may be wondering about the impact of the ongoing switch from copper cabling to fibre optic cables in the telecommunications industry. While a standard GSM unit will allow compliance with the relevant standards, the same technology has allowed the development of far more sophisticated systems that can provide you with much more than simple voice communication, should you wish to take the opportunity to upgrade further. Lift monitoring systems can include the standard auto dialling facility for emergencies, but also use the GSM capabilities to provide real time data on the lift performance and operation for maintenance and fault diagnostic purposes. Depending upon the system, it can be possible to identify potential faults before they occur, or even to rectify a fault remotely and reset the lift in service. Lift infotainment systems can also use the GSM provision to allow live information and entertainment feeds to be displayed on screens within the lift car. All of these features are becoming widely available, both as part of a new lift installation and as a retrofit to existing lifts. With the limited life span of of analogue service lines and the migration over to ‘All-IP (Fibre)’ lift lines the Connectix Lift Line Enclosure is a secure cabinet housing for the internal fibre equipment, preventing any unauthorised third-party interference and keeping hardware protected from dust and dirt located within a riser environment equipment room. I have massive respect for people who do: my late uncle was a BT foreman/linesman and he was the best – he was a doer. I don’t accept deflection. The fact the “Bill” has 6 other jobs on his card isn’t really relevant: I pay I need a working service that I pay for – I’m just grateful that “Bob” actually had the guts and integrity to go outside the box and solve our problem.

We have come a long way since those early days of telephone communication, and it is no surprise therefore to learn that such an ageing system is now beginning to struggle to cope with the sheer volume and range of use on the current network. It is for this reason that BT has taken the decision to undertake a complete replacement of the existing network by 2025, retiring the current analogue Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) systems and replacing them with a new fibre optic IP technology. Optical fibre lines may not always be compatible with these existing emergency alarm units, even after adaptations are made, even with an “analogue telephone adaptor” (ATA) to support analogue devices on fibre connections. The router carrying the signal through the line will also require an uninterrupted power supply, otherwise the service will not operate in the event of a power failure. The Connectix FTTP Lift Line Enclosure is supplied with the 80A and 3/1a in place and test cables can be made to length. Manufactured in the UK, the enclosures can be wall mounted or floor standing and is optionally pre-built and loaded with the internal equipment at factory source. One of the major advantages of Plasma is that it offers a much less invasive/expensive alternative to surgery as well as the time it takes to carry out.

If we need to visit, the engineer will recommend where to put the equipment, but it will speed up your installation if you think about where you want it to go. The transition of your lift’s emergency alarm from analogue phone lines to other digital alternatives must be considered and managed carefully ahead of time to keep your lift compliant and your passengers safe. In this blog post, we will explore the reasons behind this change, when it will be happening, and most importantly, how it will affect your lift's compliance with regulations. We will also discuss the available options for maintaining connectivity of your lift's alarm system, including Otis Elevator's own GSM units. Keep reading to learn more about the upcoming changes and how to ensure your lift remains compliant with regulations. You may wish to wash your hair on the morning of your treatment as the treatment area cannot get wet for the full week following the procedure.months before your analogue phone lines are scheduled to be switched off, you will receive a notification from your telecommunications service provider notifying you of this change. However, it is advisable to start looking for an appropriate solution sooner rather than later to avoid a rushed decision-making process. How it will affect your lift

We strive to ensure that all our treatments are offered only to people who will see the benefits. To ensure this we recommend you attend a consultation appointment a minimum of 2 days before treatment can be scheduled, so we can cover all elements that could impact your result. Bogle MA, et al. The corporation that maintains the telephone infrastructure keeping the national broadband and telephone network connected in the United Kingdom, Openreach, announced in November 2017 that traditional copper-based telephony lines, which include PSTN lines, would be phased out and eventually deactivated by the end of December 2025. The engineer on his third visit got pissed off with it and said “this is ridiculous” went to the PCP – and connected our modem onto the DSLAM link cable 18/18 – problem in DSLAM not the copper at all. A GSM option may not be suitable for every lift. Obtaining any form of signal in some buildings can prove challenging if not impossible. However, in most cases clever positioning of the aerial or GSM unit can get around these complications and allow a stable line to be achieved for the auto dialler. The telecommunications industry is currently replacing the old copper cabling technology known as the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) with fibre cables, meaning all phone calls via ‘landlines’ in the future will be made via Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The rollout will be gradual with the planned completion date being December 2025, at which point the old network will be ‘retired’. This will potentially impact the lift industry as many lifts use the PSTN to connect the lift’s alarm system. You can ask your Otis sales manager about options to alleviate any risk of non connection.

In addition to PSTN lines, other affected telephony services include Integrated Services Digital Network (IDSN) lines and Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) lines. Before leaving, the engineer will reconnect one of your computers to demonstrate that it's working OK. The engineer will also help you install the set-up disk on your computer. They'll leave you with this disk so that you can install the software on any other computers you've got. In November 2017, BT Openreach announced that traditional copper-based telephony lines, which includes PSTN lines, would be phased out and eventually deactivated by the end of December 2025. New analogue telephone lines have not been installed in the UK for some years, but due to a rolling programme for telephone exchanges, a total national “stop sell” is planned for September 2023. Then, at the end of 2025, all support for analogue lines will be removed. Results are not only immediate but continue to improve for several months following the procedure, as additional collagen builds in the deeper layers of the skin. The switch from analogue to digital is somewhat similar to the move from analogue to digital television around a decade ago, but the effects are likely to be more far reaching. While our landline telephones are the most obvious item of equipment to be affected, there are numerous other everyday items we take for granted that could all be impacted by the changeover. From door entry systems to personal care alarms, anything that currently uses an analogue telephone line is likely to be affected. And while it may be one of the less considered items, one of the more critical of those is your lift’s emergency communication device.
